100 happy things, 11-20

Continuing with part 2/10 of things that make me happy!

11. My Little Pony

Another pretty obvious one since I love customizing them ;) But I also love the retro MLP design, like the one on this t-shirt that I bought today:

12. Allison Harvard

Yes, the lovely runner-up of two seasons of America’s Next Top Model. She’s just so beautiful and her art is inspiring! I just get really happy every time I have a look at her Tumblr (! I’ve tried to draw her many times but the images never do her justice : ) Here’s an attempt at it anyway:

PicsArt_1394748618154She’s a million times more beautiful in real life!

13. Berlin

Ehehe, another obvious one. Berlin inspires me to do fashion design and improve my photography skills! It’s my favorite city in the world!

Both photos are from the Festival of lights, 2012 & 2013.

14. Peanut M&M’s

Just realized again how good they are. Mmmmmm…

15. H&M clothes

Yes, yes, H&M is a cheap brand, but I LOVE some of their clothes! More importantly they frequently have CAT THEMED CLOTHES!! How can I not love them?! Plus they also have cool Star Wars clothes at times:

IMG_2625 IMG_7036Seriously. That Darth Vader sweater is the coolest thing I own.

16. Christmas, Valentine’s Day and other holidays

I just love them because you can invest as much effort into them as you want! You can have totally cheesy-over-the-top romantic dates on Valentine’s, decorate the house on Christmas and Halloween and hide eggs around the house on Easter. They’re just nice days that give you permission to be a little crazy ^_^

IMG_3797 IMG_3677

Last year I went completely over the top with the Christmas stuff. I even made Game of Thrones-themed snowflakes at work to decorate my colleague’s wall!

Valentine’s Day was spent in Berlin this year. Soo romantic!

17. Face Off

The TV series. I’m OBSESSED with it. I just love seeing the creative process that goes into creating a character/creature design. It’s really fascinating. It’s also a bit similar to customizing because of the sculpting and painting ; ) It really inspires me to put more effort into my customs! Tyler from this season (season 6) also makes me happy, he’s just so positive and talented!

18. Video game music

I think I’ve mentioned this before? I love video game music, especially from old Nintendo games. My favorite right now is Stickerbrush Symphony from Donkey Kong Country 2. It’s soooooo good!

19. Zelda N64 games

Speaking of video games, some of the best music ever comes from The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask. The games are also incredible, I have to play them over and over again! They just make me really happy! I also have a few MM-themed customs planned ; )

20. Sushi

Sushi always makes me happy! It reminds me of my sister (we used to have a lot of DIY sushi evenings at her place when she still lived in Finland) and it’s often really good! We actually had sushi one night here in Tokyo and it turned out to be one of the most hysterically funny dinners I’ve experienced in a long time! Yet another good sushi memory!

Some amazingly good sushi in Amsterdam.

This is fun! Writing about things that make me happy makes me really happy! ^_^

Littlest customs & what’s next

I’ve been super slow with updating the blog but such is life! A few days ago I finished my fourth LPS custom so I thought I’d show it off here, along with the other three (they were the mystery creatures I talked about in the last post) :) I’ll also tell you about my upcoming LPS & MLP customs!

So here goes! Several years ago I came up with the idea to draw chibi-style Heroes of Might and Magic III creatures, mainly a Manticore baby because I thought it looked so cute (I might scan the picture and add it here later if I have time) :D One day when we were moving stuff from our old apartment, I came across one of the pictures of a baby Manticore and I realized it looked just like a Littles Pet Shop creature. That’s when I realized I should try making one. And other ones as well!

I still love HoMM3 and play it very often so I started looking for creatures that might be suitable as LPS customs. This led me into a obsession with LPS customs and I ordered way too many several LPS:es. I’ve also started planning some other collections of creatures, such as the Fruits Basket animals and others (don’t wanna spoil too much!)…

Anyways, I finally decided it was time to start making them and I chose to do the Greater Basilisk and Manticore (obviously) first.

I chose this lizard/crocodile (not really sure what it is…) for my Greater Basilisk and this cat for my Manticore. Originally I had planned on using a lion LPS for it but none of them were cute enough for me.

After prepping them (removing all the additional colors with nail polish remover) I sculpted ears, horns and additional legs for the Basilisk and a mane, wings and a tail for the Manticore (I have to admit I was really impatient with the first one and much more careful with the second one, hence the sculpting on the lizard looks pretty awful). I’m still not very happy with the result but what can you do when you’re not great at sculpting… -_-‘

IMG_3078 PicsArt_1380140413506

After that I sprayed both creatures with black spray. I thought it would look good as both creatures are quite dark and the spray serves as a good starting point for dry brushing.

I then proceeded to finish the Greater Basilisk, and here he is!

I’m really pleased with the colors, but the sculpted parts still annoy me.

I then got my Manticore done:

The colors look pretty good, although they’re not as vivid as the Basilisk’s. Then again, Manticores aren’t as colorful so it stays quite true to the HoMM3 one.

Next I proceeded with sculpting parts and spraying several LPS creatures since it’s the part I hate the most and I want to minimize the time doing it. I’m not going to post pictures of the ones that aren’t done, but I’ll tell you about my Royal Griffin and Serpent Fly, which I finished next.

The Griffin was one of the creatures I’d been looking forward most to making since it included a head swap and I’ve never done that before. I did this prior to the sculpting and spraying. Here’s what happened:

I thought it looked insanely cute and strange so I decided to proceed with it even if the head’s HUGE compared to the body :D

Then I sculpted some additional bits and pieces:PicsArt_1380402373342

It drove me completely nuts. The wings were such a huge pain in the ass. Plus they look terrible. Hmph. I’m really just not good at sculpting.

I then painted the little bird-lion, and here she is!

Loyal to the Royal Griffin’s look, her eagle head, wings and neck fluff are a light grey, while her lion body is a darker brown. The lighter part was done with an extremely dry brush so the color is a bit uneven and it adds a bit more life and texture to it. The front paws were painted to look like talons (they are so small that I didn’t bother sculpting claws, it would have looked terrible), and she’s wearing a blue and gold bow on her head (those two colors are prominent in Castle so I thought it would be appropriate).

I think she’s quite cute, even if she looks a little silly compared to HoMM3:s Royal Griffins. I wasn’t trying to make her look fierce, so I guess she turned out the way I wanted her to.

Then there’s the Serpent Fly. I guess I’ll just show you a picture that includes all the different stages, since only the wings were sculpted and all in all this one was a lot easier to do than the other three:

There’s really not a lot to tell you about this one! I painted the eyes with several thick layers of paint to achieve a really uneven, insect-like look. The wings were painted with several layers to achieve a similar look to the wings of the Serpent Flies from HoMM. They’re attached to the body quite badly so he’s very fragile, just like a real dragonfly ;) I think he’s quite cute as well!

All in all I think the HoMM creatures are turning out nice (not sure if many HoMM fans would agree but I hope they do)! The ones I’ll be working on next are Gorgon, Thunderbird, Hellhound and Firebird. After that I’ll start tackling the most annoying HoMM creatures I can imagine sculpting: dragons. There will also be a few other creatures coming up. In terms of MLP customs, I’m either going to start making Pegasusmon & Nefertimon from some G4’s I bought a few days ago or “house ponies” for our apartment (one inspired by our office’s look and one inspired by our living room so a Twin Peaks one, I guess…).

So many plans, so little time…

Oh yeah, that’s right, I should be working on my thesis and not this blog/customs! Hmph.

More ponies!

I made two new MLP customs last weekend: a birthday pony for Toffe’s mom and a Dark Side of the Moon- pony for Toffe (he’s a huge Pink Floyd fan!).

These were the bait ponies I started out with; Merry Treats (whose symbol I already tried to remove many, many years ago) and Shenanigans (whose hair has seen better days…).

I made plans, once again. The idea for the birthday pony was to keep it simple and cute with a picture on the side of Toffe’s family’s dog, Mocca.

The Dark Side of the Moon-pony’s plans look pretty awful :D Plus they changed after I realized the rainbow colors would look a lot better as his mane rather than the tail.

I then sprayed the birthday pony white (it needed a couple of layers to hide the old symbol) and Shenanigans black. It only needed one layer because the black spray covered it pretty well!

I then proceeded to finish the birthday pony first, because Toffe’s mom already had her birthday several weeks ago, whoops!

I re-rooted her 50/50 with “Chocolate Fudge” and “White Chocolate” and added small, golden highlights (“Goldilocks”) in between. Her hair is delicious-looking! ^_^

So here she is:

And her details:

I think she’s adorable and totally suits Toffe’s mom :) Thankfully she liked it too!

Onto the Dark Side of the Moon-pony! I re-rooted him with 6 different colors: “Pomme d’Amour”, “Sunset”, “Lemon Drop”, “Envy”, “Forget me not” and “Sour Grapes”. His tail is mostly “Black Magick” but has a strand of “Virgin Snow” in it. His hair is meant to replicate the Dark Side of the Moon-symbol’s colors.

So here he is!

I have to admit, he might just be my favorite MLP custom I’ve made so far! His hair was a delight to re-root (although it got frustrating at times) and he was all in all really fun to make :)

Here are his details:

That’s all for now! However, I can tell you that I just spent two hours sculpting two amazing little creatures and they’ll be done during this weekend! Won’t tell you more until I post next time ;)

My Little Pony Customs: Bride & Groom ponies

FINALLY I can post these without spoiling the surprise for my sister (who got married this Saturday, congrats!)!

I’ve been working on these the entire Summer, doing little things one at a time and not attempting to do everything at once. Of course they could be improved in lots of ways, but I’m happy with the result, and so were the bride and groom :)

I’m just going to post all the pictures from the entire process and explain a little what was done.

1. Choose ponies

I chose two baby ponies, G1 Baby Blossom and G1 Baby Moondancer, for this project since I haven’t actually ever re-rooted a MLP before and I figured baby ponies won’t take as long. I found these pictures of them online to use as reference for the planning process.

ponies2. Plan

I apologize for this part, since the picture is so awful :D This part is just for your own reference so you actually know what you’re doing! These plans don’t match the final design since I decided that less is more after all; doing the veil and tuxedo would’ve been hard, especially since I’m not great at sculpting. The ponies have a white, shimmery base coat as well that is really easy to mess up so I tried to keep it simple.

3. Spraying the base coat

This part was done by my friend Jonny since I’ve never sprayed anything before :D I covered the eyes with paper so they didn’t get spray on them (it’s much easier to paint on top of existing eyes to keep the authentic MLP look). The spray covers the existing color quite well and makes the rest of the paint layers stick better.

4. Painting the final layer, details and symbols + sculpting

I painted the ponies with a final layer of white shimmery paint (white + metallic), which I chose because I thought it went well with the wedding theme. The bride’s eyes are blue and the groom’s are brown, so obviously I decided to make the ponies’ eyes the same. The symbols are two interlocked rings (on the display side) and the initials of the happy couple on the non-display side. I apologize for the terrible, shaky symbols but I think I had had a bit too much coffee the day I painted them :D The sculpted part on the groom is a bow tie and the one for the bride is a leg garter. I’m quite happy how it turned out!

5. Re-rooting and final touches

The last part was the most difficult since I’ve never really re-rooted a MLP before. The idea is to remove the hair from the old bait pony and replace it with new, fresh hair. For my ponies I didn’t try to replicate the real couple’s hair but tried to make interesting combinations of colors for both.

The groom is re-rooted with three shades of nylon hair (bought from Dollyhair), which are called “Black Magick” (black), “Kiss of Death” (dark purple) and “Chocolate Fudge” (Dark chocolatey brown). I mainly used “Chocolate Fudge” and only did some highlights with the other two colors. For the bride I used “Oyster shell” (lovely pink-ish silvery color), “Virgin Snow” (white) and “Moonlight” (Silver). “Moonlight” was only used for highlights whereas the two others were used equally much. I lovelovelove how the bride’s hair turned out!

The last part was to paint the sculpted parts, style the hair and do a few finishing touches.

6. Done!

So here they are, all finished and nice :)

I’m very happy with the result and intend to keep customizing ponies as gifts for friends and family. The next ones I’m going to do are a gift for Toffe’s mom and a “Dark side of the moon” rainbow pony for Toffe who’s a huge Pink Floyd fan. I’ll post more pictures when I get them done!
