Little miracle

Hi all!

I haven’t posted anything on this blog in a very long time but I thought it might be nice to at least make a short (or long!) post to talk about something incredible that has been a big part of my life for the past 9 months!

As most of you know (through my Instagram posts or YouTube videos) I’m pregnant! We’re expecting a little baby boy and my due date is THIS WEEK! I very much doubt he’ll be arriving anytime soon though since I haven’t really had any signs that he would be joining us in the next few days :)

I thought it might be fun to tell you all about how we got to this point, and look back at these months and do a little reflecting.

This was a totally planned pregnancy and we didn’t have to try for very long. However, I’ve prepared myself for this incredible journey for a few years already as I’ve looked into hypnobirthing, something that changed my whole outlook on pregnancy and motherhood!

A little background…

Before I heard about hypnobirthing I had a massive fear of giving birth; in fact it was so bad that I told my husband I might never even want to have kids! I went back and forth with the idea of doing a planned c-section just to avoid natural childbirth and it all seemed like a horrible ordeal I would have to deal with while my husband wouldn’t have to suffer in any way (which to me seemed totally unfair!).

Fast forward a year or so and I randomly see the word “hypnobirthing” pop up on an Instagram profile I follow. I got intrigued (mostly because I thought it would be something very strange and fascinating, like actual stage hypnosis) and started looking into the subject. Turns out this whole way of thinking is just about making women aware that childbirth is totally safe, natural, beautiful and not necessarily painful! Hypnobirthing teaches women to relax, breath and flow with the process of birth rather than fight it, therefore making the whole experience a calmer, more peaceful event than what you’d see in most movies or TV series. It also involves your birth partner, and it just so happens I have the most amazing, supportive husband in the world. He has been completely involved in this whole process, coming to every doctor’s appointment and birth class with me and he has never made me feel like I’m alone in this whole ordeal. I know he will be with me throughout labor and together we will make it the most amazing thing we ever get to experience.

So, in short, I went from being panicked about childbirth to actually looking forward to it! My plans are to not interfere with the process of birth at all (=no drugs or an epidural) but I’m not completely against pain medication either. If I really feel like I need to manage the pain with other methods than those I’ve learned in my hypnobirthing class, I’ll do what’s best for me. As with everything in my pregnancy so far (and hopefully with motherhood once the baby is born) I intend to just take it easy and see what happens. As long as I have my husband’s support I’ll make it through anything just fine :)

So what’s going on right now?

I’ve really enjoyed these (soon) 40 weeks of pregnancy and I don’t feel like I’m in a rush to meet my baby boy. He’ll come when he’s ready and I’ll just do my best to enjoy the last few days / weeks me and my hubby have as a twosome :) As for my art, the first trimester sucked me dry of any energy I had so I got very little work done. In my second trimester I felt pretty good and actually managed to get a few customs done here and there (but not nearly as much as I should!). Now, in my third trimester, I’ve been pretty tried too but luckily I got a few customs made and sold before I started my maternity leave. I have no idea how long my break will be, I guess it mostly depends on how well I recover from labor and if our baby will be calm or difficult! Either way having a baby won’t mean it’s the end of customizing for me :)

Here’s a little ultrasound picture of our darling at only 12 weeks, time really flies!:

My bump at 33 weeks (size of a pineapple):

Speaking of my bump (warning: this will get VERY personal), I’ve gotten questions about how I feel about my body changing so much during pregnancy. The truth is that I feel amazing! It’s incredible that my body can grow an actual human and I’ve cherished every moment with this ever-growing bump. Something I’ve never shared on my social media is that I have a large abdominal scar that reaches horizontally across my stomach (I’ve had it since I was a child due to undergoing surgery multiple times for my cancer treatment) and I’ve always been worried how it would react to a possible pregnancy. Turns out it’s stretched out perfectly without any complications, and seeing my imperfect bump is proof that my body is capable of amazing things. If I were to feel bad about my looks I’d both neglect the fact that I survived cancer and that my body managed to create this wonderful little miracle in me. I’d never take either experience for granted, and I will continue to cherish my body and every scar and bump that shows what I’ve been though. I encourage every lady out there to take a long hard look in the mirror and tell themselves they are incredible <3

So here ends this rather long and very personal blog post, I hope this was an interesting read to anyone out there who was wondering why I’m not as active on my Instagram profile / YouTube channel and I hope this answered your questions ^_^ It’s crazy to think that our baby boy could join us at any moment! These past nine months have just flown by and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for our little family <3

Lots of love,

I’m still alive! + FAQ

Hey guys!

I haven’t posted anything in this blog for a while so I thought why not give you a little update on everything that’s going on in my life right now! Most of you probably know most of these things already from my videos but I thought it would be fun to write these things down anyway! I’ll also answer some VERY frequently asked questions so that people can check out this blog post in case they were wondering something :)

So here goes!

Our new house

We bought a house in October and we’ve been renovating it since then. This made me a whole lot busier than I’m used to but we’re finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel! Our estimate is that we’ll be moving in at the beginning of next month (April)! I can’t wait! ^_^ Our house is almost twice as big as our current apartment which makes my life a whole lot easier! This means I’ll have a separate office / workshop for my customs and a separate one for my Let’s Play videos, yaay! I can’t wait to get rid of this “Omg we’re moving soon”-stress / panic as well xD

Because of this new project I’ve been unable to work on customs as much as I’ve wanted to, and this has in turn affected my commissions and my progress with my series that I’ve talked about in my videos.

I opened a few slots in January and I already noticed that those were a bit too much for me. Usually I take 2-3 weeks to make a commission but this time around it ended up being more like 4-6 weeks! I didn’t feel good about this and I don’t want a similar thing to happen which is why I won’t be opening new commission slots before we’ve moved into our new house and I’ve settled down into the new workshop. Please have patience! I promise I’ll open up new slots as soon as all that works out ^_^

My series

Ahh… Where do I begin? First off, I got the idea for my series last Summer, before our (awesome) wedding. During our 10-day honeymoon I scripted the entire synopsis for the episodes and I was super excited about getting it all done as soon as possible. When we came back home I continued making the customs for the series and scripting stuff here and there but after we bought the house I just didn’t have time to continue doing that. I promised myself – and you guys – that I wouldn’t be one of those LPSTubers who starts putting up episodes of a series and then takes ages in between episodes. I don’t disagree with what they do, it’s just that I couldn’t handle the stress of the most eager subscribers asking me when the next episode will be out. This means that before I can actually start airing episodes I have to script the entire season and all the episodes, I have to get all the characters, props and backgrounds for it, I have to record all the video and audio material for it, edit it and THEN I can put it up. I know it might seem silly to some of you but I’d hate to start airing it and then potentially never finish it.

However, with all of this being said, I love the story I came up with, I love my cast of characters and I’m very excited to share all that with you when I’m ready to do so! If you want to know the progress of what’s happened so far I’ve scripted the four first episodes and I have all my customs ready. Once I’ve settled into the new house I’m sure I’ll have more time and motivation to continue scripting it!

New projects

In case you didn’t know, I filmed my first Let’s Play video yesterday! I started playing Undertale and immediately failed before the game even started by accidentally unlocking the hard mode xD I’ll have to start over and name my character something else than “Frisk”! I’ll definitely continue playing and posting videos about it – it was more fun than I thought it would be! Maybe I’ll start a separate gaming channel one day ^_^

As for my beloved customs, it seems that I’ll be starting a few new collections soon! One of them being (most likely) Western Zodiac signs made from new LPS and another one being Eeveelutions! I was thinking of making all 9 of them plus “fake” Eeveelutions of the other types (like Fighting, Poison, Steel etc.)! I think it would be lots of fun and very challenging! I’ll also start making Undertale inspired customs someday soon, but I can’t say for sure when that will be. I feel like I need to play the game first so I get a better understanding of all the different characters and their personalities :)

Other fun stuff

Well, since I’m already recapping most of what’s been going on in my life, why not continue for a bit?

My baby niece was born on the 17th of January! She is the most adorable little baby and I love her so much! ;___; My new favorite “treat” for being productive and getting customs done is going to my sister’s and hanging out with her and the baby while watching RuPaul’s Drag Race xD

Speaking of babies, people keep asking me if me and my hubby are thinking of getting any of our own anytime soon so here’s my reply to that: We enjoy being just the two of us (plus our two silly cats), and I want to enjoy that for a little while longer. I love my niece and I want to enjoy hanging out with her without having to think about whether or not I want kids one day. I like my life as it is but I’m not by any means dismissing the thought of having kids one day! I guess we’ll see what happens in the future ^_^

To end this post I thought I’d post photos of some of my recent favorite customs!

My most recently completed LPS custom collection – Birthstones!PicsArt_03-06-01.51.20

One of my favorites of the bunch – October / Tourmaline! She will go up on eBay (along with July, August, September, November & December) next week ^_^ PicsArt_01-03-11.03.04My favorite custom from the collection – February / Amethyst! She is currently listed in my eBay shop (along with January, March, April, May and June).

PicsArt_02-17-11.36.25A little custom I made for my baby niece! <3 This is the way we write dates here in Finland, and I’m aware that it’s different from the way you write it in the US!

PicsArt_12-31-06.59.51A custom I made of Markiplier’s dog Chica :) I hope I’ll get to send it to him one day!

PicsArt_12-27-09.25.18A little Spring kitty that I won’t be selling because I love her too much xD

PicsArt_01-26-11.14.29A little custom inspired by the second episode of Face Off’s season 10! I still make customs based on the episodes even though I stopped recapping them here ^_^

PicsArt_02-15-10.58.19A cupid inspired custom that I made for Valentine’s Day <3

PicsArt_03-04-12.06.06A recent custom I made based on an awesome original character by the person who commissioned me! I had tons of fun bringing this character to life! ^_^

PicsArt_02-15-11.05.04 crazyhair_2

crazyhair_4 crazyhair_5And last but not least – my special custom #600! It’s a self portrait featuring my crazy hair and a bunch of things that I like that are tangled up in it xD

In case you were curious, the things are: A coffee cup (I’m a coffee addict so it was an obvious at choice), a donut (mmm… donuts), a microphone (I love singing!), a camera (I love photography!), an engagement / wedding ring (I’m married! Yaay!), a paint brush (for obvious reasons), an Instagram icon (that’s where I first got a bunch of lovely followers <3), a YouTube icon (because of my channel and my amazing subscribers), a cat (I’m a crazy cat lady!), a NES controller (I love retro games the most) and Berlin’s TV tower (Berlin is my favorite place in the world)!

I guess that explains most of the stuff that’s been going on so I’m going to end this blog post here :) Let me know if you have questions that need to be answered and I might answer them here someday soon! Also let me know what type of blog posts you’d like to see! I’d love to make a post about the different rooms in our new house and how I went about renovating & designing them but I’m not sure if anyone would be interested in reading about that xD

Anyways, hope you’re all doing good and see you again soon!

Love, Pia

Face Off Season 8 Episode 14 recap

Whoops, this Finale recap is way overdue! Very sorry for that! :D I got so bummed out by Darla winning that it was hard to feel inspired to write anything! I think I’ve calmed down now though xD

The reason I was so bummed out was because ONCE AGAIN the most obvious concept was awarded the win. Really Darla? The four Elements? That’s the first thing that pops into your head when you have a group of four characters. It’s so uncreative. I also hated how pretty much the only creative decisions made in the designs came from other contestants in her team. I’m sure she led the team well and the concepts fit her vision but the fact that those small details were someone else’s ideas kind of took away from her deserving the win. To me Logan’s characters were much more creative and fun and really looked like a team. Emily’s were the weakest unfortunately but I’m glad she made something that she was happy about.

Thoughts about the individual characters:

Emily’s four Post-Apocalyptic characters:

Glass: I loved this one, the colors were beautiful and the glass was really well made. Definitely one of her better characters.

Wood: I didn’t love this one. The wood looked nice and realistic but the character didn’t really have a solid design concept nor did the face stand out enough to give it an expression.

Leather: Such a beautiful and cool character! I loved her hair and beauty makeup, it looked perfect for a post-apocalyptic assassin. Probably my favorite out of all four characters by Emily.

Metal: Once again, not a great concept for a character. The face also looked muddy and messy. I wish the face would have stood out a bit more and had more contrast to the rest of the head. The blemishes and bulges also didn’t look realistic enough.

All in all her characters weren’t edited enough and sadly only two of them stood out. The group wasn’t really cohesive, they didn’t look like a team to me.

Darla’s four Fantasy characters:

Air: Definitely the best of the bunch. Her color palette was subtle and pretty and all the details were stunning.

Fire: This looked more like a Stone Elemental to me. I didn’t like the lip nor the hair, it was way too pink and didn’t look like fire to me. If the hair was supposed to be fire or fire-y, they should also have somehow showed that in the surrounding stone by adding highlights to it.

Earth:  I just couldn’t get on board with this one, there was simply too much going on on her head, her dress and her staff. The face almost looked out of place in the middle of it all. I wish they would have added more contrast to the design of her head versus the rest of her and not made her into one big lump of flowers and mushrooms. She also looked really bulky, which added to the “too much” feel of the character.

Water: I didn’t like this one either, sadly. The mouth looked really strange and they definitely could have added something interesting to the silhouette. Seems like this character had the least thought put into it.

I liked her Air Spirit but the rest were very under- or overwhelming. I still can’t believe she won the whole thing by making such predictable and uninspired choices.

Logan’s four Sci-Fi characters:

Skunk: How adorable was she?! I loved the neon green pops of color, it really worked with the story of her being smelly and having to be locked up because of that. She had a great silhouette and looked great.

Lizard: I loved his silhouette too, but I feel like all the shapes and details could have been toned down just a little bit (maybe by making the spikes shorter or a more muted color?).  He definitely looked like the leader of the group.

Armadillo: I really liked this one too apart from the asymmetry of the face as well as the eyes being a bit too sunk in. His teeth were also a bit silly-looking but his silhouette was great.

Hammerhead shark: I wish they would have made him slightly more saturated or darker colors since his color palette was a bit too different from the rest. His sculpted parts were a bit rough as well. I still loved his alien-esque look and thought it was a great and unusual choice of an animal for the fourth character.

I thought his characters were solid and I loved all of them (the Skunk in particular!). They definitely looked cohesive and looked like a team.

So there we go, even though I might have sounded horribly critical I still think that that was a pretty good cast of characters over all. I think the champion coaches really helped improve the quality of the designs throughout the entire competition. It was a great season!

Here are my two customs that I made. I chose Fantasy since it was the theme I was most comfortable with. I made a (big sister) Fire Dragon and a (little brother) Ice Dragon. I wanted to make them as detailed as possible so I chose to go with a wood texture theme on both.

Miss Fire Dragon:

PicsArt_1431290761430 fire4 fire2

She’s supposed to look like burned charcoal / wood.

Little Baby Ice Dragon:

PicsArt_1431290808565 ice2 ice4

He’s supposed to look like frosty / snowy dead trees.

I’m really excited to start making more Face Off customs later this month when season 9 starts! :) See ya then!

Thanks for reading my recaps, I’ve enjoyed writing them! ^_^

Face Off Season 8 Episode 13 recap

[UPDATED: Added the finished custom!]

Gahh, this week’s recap will be very rushed and I currently don’t even have a finished custom to show you (I got really ill after London and I’m still recovering so I couldn’t work at all!)!  I will update this post once the custom has been finished though so I promise you will get to see it soon :) I decided to write the recap now though because it would feel silly recapping it after the finale has aired!

Last week’s episode was an odd one! The theme was so weirdly specific so I felt like every contestant had some problems with their designs. I also felt even more irritated that Adam was eliminated last week; it seemed pretty obvious that it didn’t matter how well Julian did in the challenge. There wasn’t a real chance of him getting to the finals due to him being in the bottom so many times before. I’m guessing that if Adam had been in the top four the judges would have had an even harder time deciding. I think the right three people got to the finale though, they all have a lot of skill and passion and deserve to win!

Thoughts about the spotlight challenge:

Emily (Top looks, won): She chose the undertaker. This wunderkind came up with some awesome solutions (once again) but I felt like her character was lacking in a few aspects. It didn’t really read steampunk or western to me and the metallic beard was very odd-looking (though the respirator was super cool!). I’m thrilled she made it to the finale and I can’t wait to see four characters from her! Very exciting to see what kind of tricks she’ll pull out of her bag in the final challenge!

Julian (Bottom looks, eliminated): He chose the bank robber. Poor Julian hadn’t fabricated anything previous to this challenge so he was freaking out a LOT. His character was super cool and filled most of the aspects the judges asked for! The character was definitely western and had steampunk elements, as well as looked cyborg enough. Unfortunately the judges had to eliminate him over Logan since he had been on the bottom so much. I can’t see any way that they would have kept him over Emily or Darla either. Julian is definitely talented and he should be very proud of making it this far in the competition!

Logan (“Bottom looks”): He chose to do a bar maid. I loved his concept but unfortunately the execution was super rough around the face, neck and chest! Ironically, if he had chosen to make those massive “hoots” the chest pieces might not have been blended so badly! His fabrication was absolutely lovely however and he really deserved the last spot in the finale. I have a feeling that Logan’s finale characters will be totally out of the box and either land him the win or completely confuse the judges. We’ll see!

Darla (“Top looks”): She chose the blacksmith. Darla had a lot of trouble with this challenge! Her execution was beautiful, as always (particularly the metal parts on the face), but her character just looked so dull and boring. The chest/stomach was the only thing that really told a story but the face and the rest of the character was just bland. For me it was lacking in the western and cyborg categories. To be honest it wasn’t terribly steam punk either. I’m looking forward to seeing her finale characters though! I bet they will be more interesting than something that was the forced result of this challenge.

I really hope Emily wins, she’s so incredibly original with her ideas and creative solutions! Darla and Logan are cool too so I won’t be too bummed out about the winner if it’s one of them :)

[Updated ] Here is my Steampunk Cyborg Western Bar Maid custom! I really love how she turned out! :) She looks very similar to my sketch so I’m satisfied!

Here are shots of her from all angles so you can see all the little details:

rosie2 rosie3 rosie4 rosie5

I’ve never done anything steampunk-, cyborg- or western-related so I’m really thrilled with how cohesive she looks!

Tonight is the season finale! Can you believe it’s gone by so fast?! Me neither! This was an awesome challenge for me and I’m SO READY for next season to start! :) The contestants are all making four characters each so I figured I’ll try to make two customs for the last recap! So excited!

See ya next week! Thanks for reading my recaps, I’ve enjoyed writing them! ^_^

Face Off Season 8 Episode 12 recap

Ha-haa! I’ve never posted a recap this early so I’m feeling particularly impressed with my time management skills this week! As I mentioned in my last post I’ll be away from tomorrow to Wednesday next week so I had to get cracking with my custom even before the episode had aired to get it finished in time!

This week’s episode of Face Off was a huge downer for me since it became very clear that this season the judges are prioritizing technical skills over any type of creativity. Yes, Darla may be more technically skilled than Emily, but her concept was so obvious and as inside the box as it could possibly be! Emily’s concept was completely new, inspired and once again she tried lots of new things technically that worked out beautifully! I can’t believe they would award Darla the win for a doll that we’ve seen a hundred times in tons of scary movies and even with last season’s Clown Doll that Sasha made (that was TONS more creative than this doll, might I add). It pisses me off that technical skills is what they’re looking for when concept design and creativity is what makes you stand out as an artist. The same goes for Julian’s super-obvious ventriloquist doll make-up versus Adam’s crazy baby doll. Adam has consistently become better and has been on the top (and won) more than Julian in recent episodes whereas Julian’s designs have gone downhill recently. There’s not one single reason I can think of that justifies keeping Julian over Adam. Even looking back at the Miss Intergalactic challenge (where they both were top looks), Adam’s concept was dramatic and completely unexpected whereas Julian’s (pretty as it was) looked like something we’ve seen before. I’m VERY mad at Face Off this week and if Darla or Julian end up winning this season I’ll be very disappointed (unless they miraculously end up coming up with amazingly creative concepts for their final looks). Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate both of them as technically skilled artists but in particular Darla’s concept design skills are not in any way inspiring. Sorry for the rant, it’s just something that REALLY pissed me off this week.

Right. The challenge this week was to create a creepy killer doll makeup inspired by classic dolls that they got to choose from.

Thoughts about the spotlight challenge:

Julian (Bottom looks): He chose the Ventriloquist dummy for his makeup. I was bored by his concept and it wasn’t painted very well. I also hated how badly defined the facial features were (normally ventriloquist dummies have very expressive faces!). It baffles me that he didn’t get eliminated even though this was his second week in the bottom.

Logan (Safe): He chose a Voodoo doll for his character. Oomph, him an Rayce really clashed this week! I hope it doesn’t bite Logan in the ass next week that he’s so stubborn. His Voodoo doll character looked pretty cool though I though the paint job was a little too monotone. Logan’s my second favorite now that Adam’s gone. At least his designs aren’t boring me to tears!

Darla (Top looks, won): She chose a porcelain doll for her creepy character, and that’s exactly what she did with her makeup (with cracking). What can I say, the concept was as obvious and safe as a concept possibly could be! Technically she executed the makeup very well and she deserved to be in top looks, but I detest the decision the judges made to award her the win over Emily. Also, I hated how high up the hairline was, normally porcelain dolls don’t have freakishly high hairlines like hers had.

Adam (Bottom looks, eliminated): He chose the Baby doll for his demonic creature. I’m a bit disappointed that he didn’t listen to mr. Westmore and Rayce when they both pointed out the flaws in his design. Oh Adam, so stubborn! At least he got eliminated after doing something he loved. The concept was very out there (in my opinion it looked too much like a cyborg) and unfortunately wasn’t executed well enough for the judges but at least it wasn’t a safe, boring design! I’d still take his creepy tentacle baby doll anytime over Julian’s boring ventriloquist dummy.

Emily (Top looks): She chose the Rag doll. I love the decision she made of making a mold from the crepe wool, the texture looked amazing! I also loved the cotton “coming out” from the doll! The wig was really impressive (as always!) and the entire character just looked incredibly well-made and creepy (while still looking beautiful!). Emily just continues to impress me week after week with her creativity and she is totally overlooked by the judges.

The other two dolls that weren’t chosen were Russian nesting dolls (which could have worked really well with Adam’s concept!) and a Papier Mache doll (I think? Not sure though!).

A really stupid week on Face Off. Emily should have won and Julian should have been sent home.

My design for this week is based on a ventriloquist dummy (a very traditional one). The concept is that a puppet maker’s son died under horrific circumstances and his father wanted to make a doll to honor his memory. The doll became possessed by the boy’s vengeful spirit and is now killing people. Very standard :D

So here is custom #373, “Puppet” (in lack of a better name).

I think he looks really creepy! Very standard in terms of design but effectively creepy anyway. He’s made from a boxer LPS in case you were wondering :D

Next week’s episode features the artists creating steampunk cyborg characters based on classic Western characters. Wait what?! I have no experience with steampunk, cyborgs or Western characters :D I’m so screwed! I’ll still try my best though but don’t expect anything amazing from me next week!

Now off to cry silently because of Adam’s elimination and once I’m over that I’ll pack for London! See ya next week!

Face Off Season 8 Episode 11 recap

For once I’m posting a day before the next episode airs, woop! Speaking of which, I’ll try my hardest to get this week’s episode’s recap + custom up on Friday (I’m going to London on Saturday -> Wednesday) but if I don’t have time to do that I’ll have to post on next week’s Thursday instead. We’ll see how it goes!

So last week’s episode featured creativity at its purest form as the Face Off contestants got to create characters based on six kids’ imaginary friends! I have to admit that I never had an imaginary friend as a kid, I only had plush toys that I’d imagine coming to life during the night (nowadays that thought freaks me out since I recently received a very creepy-looking Chica from FNAF plush…).

It was interesting to see how out of the champion coaches Laura was the only one who pointed out exactly what you shouldn’t do in this type of challenge, mainly trying to do EXACTLY what your kid wanted. If Ben had gotten that memo, I don’t think he would have been eliminated.

Thoughts about the spotlight challenge:

Julian (Bottom looks): He made a character called B-Boy Z for a little breakdancing boy called Andrew. I loved the initial concept but I completely understand why Laura asked him to do something else. The final look was pretty confusing, as the judges pointed out. I liked the bone mohawk on it but ultimately the character looked too much like a skeleton and not enough like a zombie. When I first watched the episode I was shocked that Ben was eliminated but looking back at some of their creations I have to agree that Julian had more top looks than Ben.

Darla (Top looks): She made a diamond-faced character for Jordyn. I have to say, I really, really didn’t like the character. The color of the face, hair and dress clashed for me but I guess the character was alright if you’d have her in a super-colorful children’s movie or TV show. The fact that the button-glasses received a ton of praise was kind of hilarious considering it was Laura’s idea to have them and not Darla’s. Another thing that bugged me was the way the model was smiling, it showed the rough seams around the mouth and looked really creepy! She tends to do that with all her makeups though.

Emily (Safe): I have to say, Emily’s bunny character “Lulu” that she made for Maya ended up looking pretty creepy! However, I love how she was really creative once again and flocked the entire character. Too bad the judges didn’t notice it! I also loved the color palette and wig she made for it. Ve’s comment that Emily should have done a big hairdo was totally uncalled for though, considering she complained about the hair last week!

Ben (Bottom looks, eliminated): He did a monster for a little boy called Blayne who had a long list of features he wanted on the character. I wish Anthony had told him to edit the character a bit but as a coach he didn’t seem to find the balance of helping Ben and force him to think critically. The monster was cute but looked really, really rough and unfinished. With a bit more time I think Ben could have pulled it off and made it into a very cool look! Very sad to see him and Anthony go!

Logan (Safe): He made a Mermaid called Bella for the adorable Alexandra. Logan did a great job, especially considering how reluctant he was to do something so pink and pretty. I loved his reaction to her explanation, he’s pretty hilarious! Logan is really becoming a contender for taking the whole thing (though I’m still rooting more for Emily and Adam)!

Adam (Top looks, won): How has Adam not won a single challenge before this? He has had so many great characters in previous challenges! His big-mouthed character called Lazor was a great example of doing just enough based on the kid’s design and putting your own spin (and editing skills) to it. Lance seemed to like it too even though it didn’t have every single feature he wanted. I really loved the final look, it was super cool!

Overall a very interesting week on Face Off! I didn’t really love any of the characters apart from Adam’s though.

My design for this week is based on Maya’s imaginary friend “Lulu”. The only thing we heard about it was that it’s a bunny and it’s super cute. Sounds like a perfect description for a bunny custom, right?! I also wanted to give a little love to Emily with this one and give the custom really crazy hair. The color scheme was inspired by the character that Emily created. I think she turned out very cute and whimsical!

So here is custom #367, “Lulu”.

Tomorrow’s episode features the artists creating deadly dolls. I’m not looking forward to it for two reasons:

1. I hate dolls. They creep me out.

2. I’ve already made two customs based on creepy dolls. Why do I have to make a third one?! Argh. But, an artist does what has to be done. So the third creepy doll will for sure be the creepiest. At least I’ll try!

Until next week!

Face Off Season 8 Episode 10 recap

Hey hey!

Last week was Superhero / -villain week at FaceOff! It was a really interesting episode since the artists created characters based on themselves as well as used themselves as models for the makeups. It was really cool getting to know the artists a bit better and overall I think they all did well (though I feel like several of them weren’t really using themselves as alter egos). Once again I really loved how the artists were helping each other in last looks. This is why I love this show! ^_^

Thoughts about the spotlight challenge:

Logan (Top looks, won the challenge): I think Logan did a great job with the face and the overall look but the wings looked kind of sloppy to me. He seemed really comfortable on stage with the acting and his voice as Slayer was super funny! Good job Logan (though I’m still not rooting for you, sorry)!

Julian (Safe): I’m sorry,  but his face looked kind of hilarious with that makeup. It looked so juvenile, like he was a little demon teenager! I would have liked to see less flesh tones in the face, it might have helped to give it a more severe look.

Stephanie (Bottom looks, eliminated): She went for a black and white look but I really feel like she should’ve changed up her color scheme last minute if she thought it didn’t work the way it was. She’s been having some trouble with time management throughout the season and it showed in this character because it lacked a solid concept. I really liked Stephanie though so it was sad to see her go (…and kind of hilarious because she was still wearing the makeup from the challenge).

Darla (Safe): She went for a guardian angel character. I wish they would have showed her cowl more, it looked really cool when she was sculpting it! I liked her concept and her color scheme but the parts around her chin made it look like she had a skin disease of some sort. Sorry Darla, I was not a fan of this one.

Ben (Safe): Normally I’m not really into horror-type villains but Ben did an amazing job this week! He drew a lot of inspiration from his real life and the makeup was super well made (and kind of gross-looking). “It’s time for me to apply the bald cap. Just kidding.” Okay, I kinda love Ben now, that comment made me laugh out loud :D

Emily (Bottom looks): Boo. I loved her huge hair (it’s her thing!) but for some reason the judges are getting fed up with it. She did a lot of great and smart things this week, like trying a test makeup way before painting the final look as well as successfully making a silicone face appliance for the first time. I think she looked gorgeous, though I guess I can agree with the judges that it wasn’t necessarily very superhero-esque.

Adam (Top looks): How did Adam not win this one?! He’s the only one who really used himself as the alter ego and it was clear that he really enjoyed himself throughout the challenge. I loved his look, in particular those super cool arms and the way he used his own hair to inspire the color scheme. Adam’s definitely my favorite contestant along with Emily, I really hope they both make it into the finals!

Overall a really great week and challenge on FaceOff!

My design for this week is based on my mascot who is also the alter ego for this custom (she’s the yellow/pink kitty in the second photo). I had a hard time thinking of what my superpower would be so I went with a guardian angel type of character for my superhero.

So here is “Blue Skies” (custom #361)! Her superpower is her undying optimism and she spreads positive energy to people around her.

PicsArt_1427228977563 PicsArt_1427229093559

Blue Skies and my regular mascot custom.

I think she turned out super cute! Who knows, maybe one day I’ll make a YouTube series about these two! :)

Today I also made this little Face Off custom based on Adam’s Miss Cigar Galaxy makeup from a few weeks back! He re-posted my photo on his Instagram account which kinda made me fangirl a whole lot :D I’m so glad he liked it!

Littlest Miss Cigar Galaxy (custom #362)!

Making this custom was a lot of fun! The sculpting and painting was challenging but I really enjoyed it (particularly the painting)! :) I don’t use an airbrush so I kind of impressed myself with my drybrushing skills around the “mohawk” :D Guess I still keep improving even after 300+ customs!

Anyways, I can’t wait to watch tonight’s Face Off episode! I see a lot of potential for more LPS versions of the makeups since tonight’s designs are based on kids’ imaginary friends :)

Until next week!

Face Off Season 8 Episode 8 & 9 recap

Oomph! Here is an extremely late recap once again! Very sorry for the delay, I was abroad last week and have been battling a cold ever since I got back :( Not a very inspiring start to get me back to customizing!

This is going to be a very quick recap but I hope you enjoy the customs! :)

Episode 8 was very standard and kind of boring to me. I don’t enjoy horror movies so most of the makeups did nothing for me.

Thoughts about the spotlight challenge:

Emily (Top looks): She got a very funky feathered shirt. I didn’t like the outfit but once again I’m head over heels with Emily’s creation! The “cage” she designed looked amazing and I’m really bummed out that it didn’t work out.

Stephanie (Bottom looks): Oh boy. The outfit she chose was very odd-looking so I understand why she had a hard time coming up with a concept for the makeup! The makeup itself was terrible, I didn’t really know what was going on on the right side of the model’s face.

Darla (Safe): Looked like an alien, not a demon. The model’s expression during the reveal looked really dorky too and the seams around the mouth looked kind of rough. Can’t say much about the outfit since it didn’t seem very interesting.

Adam (Safe): With that absolutely hideous outfit as inspiration I’m shocked Adam managed to create something so cool!  I’m surprised that he wasn’t in top looks, it was really unique and interesting. Good job Adam!

Jamie (Bottom looks, eliminated):  What a terrible makeup. I really like Jamie but everything was wrong with this, both the sculpting and paint looked super rough. The concept itself looked super cool as a sketch but just didn’t translate into the makeup. Sorry to say but Jamie deserved to go home at this stage, her creations were such hit-or-miss quality compared to the rest of the artists.

Julian (Top looks): He managed to do something really cool considering the wacky outfit he chose was supposed to be the inspiration for it! The makeup looked really well-made and super scary.

Ben (Top looks, won): I loved the look Ben chose and he absolutely did everything right in this challenge! He deserved to win this one. The back of the head was super cool and the overall presentation was clean and beautiful as well as futuristic.

Logan (Safe): I loved his concept of the different poisons on his arms but the makeup was really messy-looking unfortunately (both the face and the arms). Logan is an interesting artist, he has such out-of-the-box ideas that sometimes are very hard to read from the final look.

Kelly (Top looks): I just can’t get on board with Kelly’s creations. It was a cool concept and the mask was a super-cool touch but it looked incredibly messy and not “intelligent and stylish”. The cuts on her forehead in particular bothered me, they just looked so clumsy (maybe because of the wacky hairline? I don’t know!). I didn’t like it at all.

My custom for this week’s challenge obviously doesn’t look scary, but it was inspired by avant-garde for sure! I chose this look from Viktor & Rolf Spring / Summer 2015:

Photo from: http://twelvmag.com/fashion/viktor-rolf-spring-2015-couture

She’s a deadly, avant-garde wearing scarecrow. I kind of love how she turned out! ^_^

PicsArt_1426544095095Here’s a WIP photo so you see what I sculpted (yes, those are toothpicks :D):

Onto episode 9! Warning: alien beauties are not my forte at all!

My thoughts on the Holi-powder foundation challenge makeups:

Team Laura:

Stephanie (Won immunity): Wanted to show the transformation from Winter to Spring. Her look was gorgeous and deserved the win!

Emily: She did some very pretty effects by drawing lines using water. Very delicate but not a great use of colors.

Darla: Radiating fingertips seemed to be the only thing about this makeup that was memorable.

Julian: They didn’t really show his final look! But it looked cute (and random).

Team Rayce:

Logan: Used the colors quite randomly. Pretty effect with the drawn lines (though it seemed like he stole that idea from Emily)!

Adam: Tried to show a Phoenix with the colors. Kind of messy-looking but the look he was going for was apparent.

Team Anthony:

Kelly: Her model’s face looked pretty messy, but other than that it was alright!

Ben: The face of his model reminded me of a tropical bird, very pretty!

My thoughts about the absolutely dorky and super funny spotlight challenge:

Emily (Safe): She chose Miss Pinwheel Galaxy though by the end it looked more like Miss Super Glitter Galaxy! She was so excited about this challenge, it was a lot of fun to watch! I loved that she fabricated the dress for her model, it was a really amazing outfit! I agreed with the judges though that the face ultimately didn’t look very “beautiful” compared to the top looks.

Stephanie (Safe): She chose Miss Tadpole Galaxy. The smiling model looked so creepy but kind of funny too! I didn’t love the makeup though, there wasn’t really anything memorable about it unfortunately.

Ben (Bottom looks): He chose Miss Andromeda Galaxy. She just looked super creepy, I don’t really know what else to say! The makeup definitely missed the mark so Ben was lucky his two previous challenge wins kept him from going home!

Adam (Top looks): He chose Miss Cigar Galaxy. Adam managed to strike a great balance between a beautiful but super cool and cute character! I loved the profile, this was definitely one of my favorites this week! Adam is FINALLY stepping up his game!

Logan (Safe): He chose Miss Comet Galaxy. The final look was very forgettable and not very pretty (mainly because of her wonky upper lip). He was rightfully “safe” this week.

Julian (Top looks): He chose Miss Whirlpool Galaxy. She was so gorgeous, I can’t comprehend how he didn’t win this week! Julian keeps getting robbed and is overlooked way too much by the judges.

Kelly (Bottom looks, eliminated): She got Miss Sombrero Galaxy. I can see why a galaxy with that name would confuse Kelly enough to not be able to come up with a solid concept. The sculpt looked really rough around the mouth and the paint job was very wonky so Kelly definitely deserved to go home this week. Poor Anthony, only one of his artists remains in the competition!

Darla(Top looks, won): She chose Miss Sculptor Galaxy. I don’t know why this one won to be honest! It’s a gorgeous sculpt but Julian’s was so much prettier! This character’s face was just so stern-looking and the black dress added to the weirdly dark feel of the design. I love Darla and I’m glad she’s on top again but I just can’t get on board with the judges’ decision.

Here is my own creation, Miss Sunflower Galaxy! The petal shapes on her head were inspired by the galaxy’s name:

I loved painting her! But I don’t think she’ll be winning Miss Intergalactic anytime soon xD I’m not great with aliens and making a pretty one was even more challenging! I still think I did alright! In case it’s not obvious, I used a G3 chipmunk as the base figure for her.

Tonight’s episode will feature the artists as superheroes! No clue what my superpower would be but I guess I have to start figuring it out soon! :D

See you next week!

Face Off Season 8 Episode 7 recap

Time for another very late Face Off recap! I’ll make this a very quick one since I still have to pack for Berlin today! :)

Thoughts about this episode: Bodypainting is a ridiculous and stupid challenge for makeup / special effect artists. I disliked the episode because the person who went home obviously wasn’t experienced with bodypainting and would have deserved to stay longer.

Foundation challenge makeups:

Team Laura:

Stephanie: Chose the Dandelion hat. I loved the hat! It had so much potential but the end result was not great! I thought the final makeup looked pretty terrible from afar.

Emily (Won immunity): She chose the metal and rhinestone hat and created a character based on the concept of an Emperor’s daughter. Absolutely gorgeous and deserved to win!

Darla: She made a Nomadic warrior. Not great at all, I didn’t understand the concept.

Julian: He made an ugly-looking demon thing. Forgettable.

Team Rayce:

Logan: Ship hat. Really ugly, no real concept and didn’t match the dramatic hat at all.

Rob (Top looks): He chose a top hat and based his character on Pinocchio. He had a lovely concept and makeup! I kind of wish he has won this challenge to keep him safe from elimination.

Adam: Looked pretty alright from a distance.

Team Anthony:

Kelly: She chose a toy hat. The final look was whimsical but looked really unoriginal.

Jamie: She made an evil Victorian Queen. Very average and unforgettable.

Ben: He made a  Geisha / Japanese-looking makeup. Pretty, but not a standout.

Thoughts about the spotlight challenge:

Emily & Jamie (Top looks): They chose the Honey Bee. Both looks were absolutely gorgeous, especially up close! Super, duper pretty!

Darla & Stephanie (Safe): They chose the Jewel Beetle. The boobs looked kinda awkwardly positioned…! The second model was barely utilized which was a shame. I’m very surprised they were safe and not bottom looks!

Adam & Rob (Bottom looks, Rob eliminated): They chose the Ladybug. Oh boy. The larvae looked terrible (almost like muscle tissue) and I totally agree with the judges that the Ladybug looked terrible. Her hair was especially distracting. I felt sad that Rob was eliminated, he was such a sweet and talented guy!

Julian & Logan (Top looks, Logan won): They chose the Cuckoo Wasp. It was gorgeous and clever so they totally deserved to win! They owe it all to Laura though!

Ben & Kelly (Bottom looks): They chose the European Hornet and completely forgot about what team work means. Ben is way too stubborn and clearly only thought about himself in this challenge.

Anyways, here is my own creation was inspired by Emily’s Queen Bee:

I love how she turned out, especially since this was only a repaint!

Next week there won’t be a recap since I’m in Berlin on holiday (FINALLY!!!) but there will be a double episode recap in a few weeks :)

See you again in a few weeks!

Face Off Season 8 Episode 6 recap

Hellooo! Another week, another Face Off recap! I’m slowly getting back into customizing after having a rough couple of weeks so it’s getting better! :) I promise I’ll write a customs #326 -> #340 post  soon!

If there’s one thing about last week’s episode that I want to talk about, it’s how trolls are my least favorite fantasy creatures. I hate their aesthetics and as you saw with the outcome of this episode, that’s something you apparently can’t change up too much without accidentally making it a non-troll. I love pretty creatures and the standard troll features are everything but that. With my custom I luckily found a little loop-hole in the aesthetics that made my design both cute and troll-like! We’ll get to that in a bit!

The trolls and my super-biased opinions on the designs:

Emily (Bottom looks): She chose the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco. I loved her design (mainly because I’m a huge fan of hers) apart from the mouth but I agree with the judges that it didn’t look like a troll. I like how she’s going for very feminine looks every week but I hope she shows us more variety in her designs soon!

Darla (Safe): She chose the Python Bridge in Amsterdam. I didn’t really like it but I agree that the paint job was great. I’m glad she was safe though since I’m rooting for her!

Anthony (Bottom looks, eliminated): He got the Helix Bridge in Sinpagore. Poor Anthony! He had a whole complex backstory worked out for the character and the judges completely misunderstood the concept. I think he’s really talented (and I also liked the design!) but he just didn’t know how to give the judges what they wanted. Also, the way Rayce screwed up the challenge for his entire team was kind of sad and showed that even a seasoned Face Off veteran doesn’t always know what the judges are looking for! To be completely honest I don’t understand why the judges were so incredibly conservative with their thoughts on troll aesthetics. I understand why Rayce gave his team the advice to do something unexpected but clearly it didn’t pay off!

Adam (Safe): He chose the Dragon Bridge in Bali. I love Adam and his designs, this one included (though the stone chin was a bit weird)! I was super impressed by his sketch during the design phase, I hope he makes it far!

Julian (Safe): He chose the Corvin Bridge in Transylvania. I thought his design was very traditional and quite ugly. The proportions were really odd too.

Ben (Top looks): He chose the Python Bridge in Amsterdam. Oh man, I don’t really know what to say about this one! I like that he thought completely outside the box (and he absolutely deserved to be in top looks) but MAN was that face ugly! The belly button was terrible too but maybe it looked better in real life? I just didn’t like it at all, probably because the troll aesthetics do nothing for me.

Rob (Bottom looks): He chose the Tower Bridge in London. I actually liked this one (apart from the mouth) but it definitely looked more like a goblin than a troll.

Kelly (Top looks): She chose the Tower Bridge in London. I just can’t get on board with Kelly’s designs, I’m sorry. I thought the sculpt was too similar to her Queen of Spades and she’s a one-trick pony for me. I’m waiting for her to step it up and show variety or go home. This also didn’t look like a troll to me.

Jamie (Top looks, winner): She chose the Dragon Bridge in Bali. I loved her troll and she absolutely deserved to win this one. The wood texture was lovely and it was a perfect concept for this challenge! Good job Jamie! Keep it up!

Stephanie (Safe): She chose the Corvin Castle Bridge in Transylvania. This was super ugly and overworked, sorry Stephanie!

Logan (Safe): He chose the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Another misstep from Rayce’s team. There was way too much going on and it didn’t work with the challenge since it looked nothing like a troll.

All in all a pretty unsuccessful week since I didn’t love a single one of the designs apart from Jamie’s!

Anyways, onto my own creation!

I’ll tell you my inspiration behind this week’s custom as it’s not the stereotypical troll! I chose the same bridge as Adam & Jamie, and decided to draw inspiration from these troll toys I used to have as a kid (photo from Wikipedia):

So here you go, here’s my little forest troll (with a huge branch on the head instead of hair):

PicsArt_1424788553922I’m really happy with how it turned out! He’s pretty adorable but looks sufficiently troll-like to me :)

Hope you enjoyed my post and my custom! Can’t wait to watch tonight’s episode!
